Day 8 At Sea

Oh what a privileged life we lead!  I realize just how luck we are to be on a cruise ship.  Made (maud-eh) and Alan are our room stewards that keep our bathrooms spotless and make our beds.  They are like Ninjas that quietly sneak into the room when we are out to breakfast and dinner - and when we return - things are spotless again!

Today J played bridge and I thoroughly enjoyed time on our verandah.  Today was the first day that it was warm enough to sit outside in shorts and a t-shirt.  And since I think it is safer to sit on our own little patch of heaven, rather than on crowded decks, I really appreciated the fact that we got an upgrade to a verandah cabin.

Aft deck view while eating lunch!

Tonight was a gala dinner - one that Holland America calls ‘dressy’ (they used to be called formal).  There was quite a mix of attire - some men wore tuxedos.  Others wore coloured dress shirts.  Some women wore pants, others wore long dresses.  There was quite the range of clothing, but certainly more upscale than other nights.  And we were luck enough to have a jumbo shrimp appetizer, surf and turf main course and flourless chocolate cake for me, and strawberries romanoff for J.  Delicious!

One of the tour companies I approached to book an excursion in Tonga - shared this with me:  “Thank you for your inquiry.  Unfortunately everone in our company had to leave Tonga to seek work outside the country post covid/Earthquake/Tsunami since there haven’t been any tourists for close to three years.  I hope you enjoy your time in the Kingdom.”  So this puts it all in perspective.  COVID has been devastating on many industries in Canada (and around the world), but we are still able to turn to other industries to find work within Canada.  So Tonga, when we tourists visit your country on Oct 27 and 28th, we hope our ship’s visit brings some much needed business and revenue to your country to help you recover.  Amen.
