Lake Natron is within the Great Rift Valley. The valley runs from Ethiopia to Tanzania. Since I cannot remember everthing Chris Fisher said about the Great Rift Valley I’ll tell you what Wiikipedia says “The origins of humanity can be traced back to Africa, with homo sapiens found in Africa’s Great Rift Valley about 200,000 years ago.”
We visted the Engaresero Human Footprints this morning. These footprints were discovered preserved in volcanic ash that was from an erupyiom of thr Lengai volcano. In 2006 a worker found the footprints, and told the landowner who then told the government about the discovery. The government then sent a geological survey to investigate and discovered more. These footprints are evidence of prehistoric Human Social Activity dating back 10,000 years ago.
Three women appeared in our very remote location selling their wares. Neil said they were the best prices in Tanzania so a few of us were happy to help the local economy.
As today’s high is 37 C, after our excursion I was happy to hang out in the shade of the central lounge area where we eat meals. It is a one kilometre round trip from our tent to the lounge tent, so avoiding unnecessary heat and walking seemed prudent. After lunch I happily walked to our tent and elevated my legs - chilling on the front deck writing this blog and trying different technical fixes moving pictures from my phone to a hard drive then to my iPad for better viewing.
An iphone is not the best way to capture bird photos but this photo does show the lesser and greater flamingoes (the greater are about 1.5 feet taller than the lesser flamingoes), Great Cormorants and a selection of gulls. I should add I took the photo standing on the front deck of my tent! I have been using my binoculars a lot on this segment of the trip.
We were invited for tea at 4 pm at the lounge tent, but staying at my tent enjoying the view seemed like a better idea!
Interesting fact: the name of our landscaping company is…Rift Valley! Randy bought the company from a man who lived there when he was an MK (missionary kid). You are the only person we know, other than him, who’s been there!
